History of the Department

The Bay St. Louis Fire Department began as the Independent Hope, Hook and Ladder Company volunteer
department in the late 1800's and became a full-time, paid department in 1962 with one engine and driver.
Today the Bay St. Louis Fire Department is a professional fire and rescue service with 21 members.

The department now has three pumpers, a rescue unit, a tanker trucker and the department's

newest addition to their tools, a state of the art 75 ft aerial truck.  The pumpers and the aerial each have

the capacity to pump 1750 gpm.  The department also has a fire safety demonstration trailer and also a

multi-purpose all terrain Mule vehicle.

Fire Station No. 1 is located on Main Street and was completed in 2010.  This beautiful building was designed as a FEMA 361 hardened structure to meet 200+  MPH winds and blast resistance criteria.  Materials include an armored masonry shell with brick facade, blast-resistant glazing, and a concrete roof deck plus waterproof membrane. These features contribute to the “hardened” envelope that keep people safe in a hurricane.

In order for the Fire House to be self-sufficient it has sustainability features including a potable water cistern, rainwater harvesting to fill trucks, emergency power generator, and an energy-efficient ground-source heat exchange system.  The facility has 4 apparatus bays, 8 bunkrooms, administrative offices, a classroom training center and is the home to the City's Emergency Operations Center.
